Topiary--A Novel Overview

This "futuristic" and highly satiric novel is actually set, just like George Orwell's "1984," not in the future at all but in the present itself, a present that the author (again like Orwell) sets out to portray as it actually is rather than as people have grown accustomed to it in an unthinking acceptance. In "Topiary," the central character goes by the name of "Plantman." He earlier worked as writer for an enormous ad agency, but now, having switched careers from "death" to "life" and from "falsehood" to "growth," he is hired by a company called "Topiary Techniques" to water and otherwise nurture and care for the only green and living things in the great business towers of "The City," namely, the green plants that have been supplied to corporate directors by Topiary Techniques in order to bring some bit of life into the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dead cubicles and "offices" throughout The City. Partly Candide, partly the Thoreau of "Walden," partly Johnny Appleseed, and partly the free-associating mind of the highly literary novelist himself, Plantman "travels" both inwardly and outwardly, meeting all the city's most influential (and just as often, cruelly or blindly destructive) denizens. In the end, Plantman very nearly dies from a hideous disease symbolizing the power of The City's toxicity (both literal and moral) over the powers of the green, organic, and natural: That is, over the powers of "life." Still, a touch of hope does bless novel's end as Plantman sets forth on one last quest that may--if we're very, very lucky--save us all.

Topiary (Shire Library) Overview

Topiary, the art of creating sculpture in clipped plants, originated with the Romans, who employed 'toparii' to clip their hedges. The fashion traveled throughout Europe in the Renaissance, using rosemary, lavender and hyssop as well as the more traditional evergreens of yew, holly, myrtle and box. Louis XIV's Versailles was a triumph of art over nature, and in the low countries cone and lollipop shapes formed, and soon hopped around the globe to populate the gardens of England and America.

However, as the fervor for 'natural' landscapes swept through Europe, eighteenth century nurserymen were left with serried ranks of overgrown topiary figures. Fashion mocked the few gardeners who continued to clip, and in 1890 William Robinson claimed that 'a man with shears in his hands is doing fool's work. But as 'ye old Englishe garden' found favor again, so the chess pieces, crowns and artful peacocks broke cover, often claiming an unbroken history of clipping by generations of gardeners. Even Gertrude Jekyll, that doyen of the flowery border, had her favorite topiary yew cat. Despite box disease and labor shortages, topiary has seen a revival in the twenty-first century, and amateurs in the art can purchase 'preformed' rabbits and deer to graze suburban lawns.

Growing Ivy Indoors

Ivy is one of the few plants native to Europe, and was also one of the first plants to be grown in the home. Ivy has many different cultivators, and varies in leaf size as well as color and variegation. The leaves of some ivies are as large as a saucer while others have leaves smaller than a dime. Many ivies have leaves edged, splashed or centered with silver, gray-green, white, cream, yellow, chartreuse or gold. Because ivies are such easy plants to keep, there are often neglected. It is important to remember that they do not like an environment that is too hot or too dry. They will do best in the humid business of other plants. But, with proper care and maintenance, they will thrive in your home year round.

Healthy ivy plants grow bright, firm leaves that are compact with strong shoots growing from the town of the plant. Plainly clip out the important shoots a few times a year to encourage bushy growth. Ivies do best in full light, but too much direct light can bleach the leaves. If you begin to loose leaf variegation, you need more light. Water once a week in the winter, and it is a good idea to water the leaves as well. Plainly put the plant in the kitchen sink, water thoroughly and then spray the foliage. Humidity is important, so try to make sure that you spray the leaves with a mister a few times a week.

-leaves pale in the summer months mean the plant is getting too much direct sun so move the plant to a slightly shaded spot

-silvery marks on the leaves indicate thrips which can be eliminated with a insecticide spray every week until clear

-leaves turning dry and crisp means that the plant has gotten too hot and dry so move the plant to a cooler room and growth the humidity by spraying

-lanky stems with long spaces between leaves or inordinate leaf drop means that the plant got too cold or too exiguous light. Move to a warmer spot with temperatures over 45 degrees

-leaves turn black indicates too much water so let the soil dry between watering

Ivy (Hedera species) is a versatile houseplant that can be grown in many different situations. Ivies can be grown in hanging baskets, at the base of other houseplants and in pots of their own. Ivy is often trained on trellis frames or wire topiary forms into varied formal or whimsical shapes. With proper care and maintenance, an ivy plant should thrive in the home for many years.

Rose Centerpiece Ideas - How to generate Rose Centerpieces

Modern roses are easy to grow with few requirements. They need eight hours of sun a day, rich soil, and moist but not soggy soil. Roses are ready year round at Florists. Grocery store floral departments often offer roses at trade prices in a wide range of colors. So what can you do with all those roses? Here are several rose centerpiece ideas.

Topiary

The Topiary

A topiary is a plant that is clipped in geometric shapes or other fanciful designs. One of the most coarse is the lollipop design, a sphere atop a trunk. Strip the leaves from the roses. Hold the roses right below their heads and tie. Cut the stems all the same length. Tie the stems at the bottom as well. Put floral foam into a shallow container. The foam should barely fit. Soak with water. As the foam absorbs the water it expands and will now fit tightly into the container. Push the rose stems into the foam. Cover the foam with sphagnum moss. If the arrangement is too top heavy cover the foam with glass pebbles or marbles and then the moss. As the roses open the tight bouquet at the top will fill out and look as if a sphere.

Sentries

One rose in a bud vase is pretty, a dozen roses each in their own vase marching down the town of a table is stunning. Vases should all be the same for the best effect. an additional one idea is to cut the stems very short and place the rose blossom in votive candle holders. Alternate a rose with a votive possessor that holds a candle.

Cut the rose stems in varying lengths, with every two roses having the same length. The tallest rose is in a vase in the center. As the roses progress towards the ends of the table the lengths gets shorter and shorter. Scatter rose petals among the vases.

Water Wonders

Wait until the blossoms have opened about halfway. Cut the stems off and float the roses in a clear shallow dish. Stack the shallow dishes for a tiered follow using clear glasses as the reserve between the dishes. Float a rose in each clear glass.

Find an empty round fish bowl, the kind used for goldfish works perfectly. Use a metal flower frog to anchor the roses. The frog looks like a pin upholstery with the sharp ends pointing upwards. The stems of the flowers are pushed onto the pins to hold them. Dispose the rose stems on the sharp ends. Place the flower frog in the fish bowl. Cover the bottom of bowl with glass pebbles. Fill with water so the roses are underwater.

Roses are inexpensive, easy to grow, and fun to work with when you originate rose centerpiece ideas.

Pearl lived in a working class neighborhood which had the unfair reputation of not having the interest or ability to win such an award. Pearl had talent and allowed it to shine through his topiary and in the process squashed ignorant misconceptions. Pearl embraced his energy and talents and is now one of the greatest topiary artists of our time. Creative Fireplace Mantel - Arranging and Wall Decorating Tips

Do you ever wish you didn't have a fireplace in your home, plainly because it's such a decorating mystery? A new mantel shelf could turn your mind. It may not be the mantelpiece, but how to dress it up with interesting wall decorating and accessories that is so confounding. The following tips will help you arrive at that exquisite arrangement nearby your fireplace..

Furniture Arrangement

The Topiary

Furniture should acknowledge the proximity of the fireplace, and never bar way to it. An easy furniture arrangement is a U shape, with the fireplace at the top of the U. Though the fireplace is the focal point, you don't have to point every piece of furniture toward it. For instance, you can place wing back chairs on whether side of a fireplace, facing into the room at a diagonal. Place an occasional table in in the middle of for cozy fireside reading and board games. Position a small couch and loveseat opposite each other and perpendicular to the fireplace. In a small room, place a flat screen television over the fireplace mantel.

Wall Decor

A peek inside an interior decorating book at wall décor nearby fireplaces will affirm the many ways pictures or art can be displayed on a wall. But not every arrangement and wall decorating idea is pleasing to the eye. For those of us who are not designers, here are a few suggestions:

  • The simplest explication is a single, large framed work of art, a print, or photo. Town it slightly toward the mantel.
  • Position equally sized framed pictures close together to form a larger shape.
  • Hang a decorative wall mirror in a frame that complements the motif.
  • Install decorative wall sconces on whether side of the mantel to set off framed art.
  • Line the fireplace mantel shelf with framed black and white photos of dissimilar sizes, with the unifying factor of a singular color frame.

Fireplace Mantel

Before you bedeck your fireplace mantel, consider what you want to show off, and the impression you want to give. Since the fireplace is your focal point, what do you want visitors to see? What do you want to enjoy finding at day after day?

Your fireplace mantel should also reflect the normal feel of the room. Is it:

  • Formal? consider candlesticks, vases, a mantel clock, and brass wall sconces.
  • Lived-in-casual? Use natural, eclectic elements like fresh flowers, a silk topiary, or drift wood. Join glass in a less formal vein with lanterns, a clock under a glass dome, or a variety of antique bottles. Wrought iron wall sconces add a considerable grounding color for neutral palettes and feature any wall decorating display above the mantel.
  • Victorian? The Victorians were fond of their collections. Feel free to busy up your mantel with a doily runner, figurines, decorative plates, and maybe a vase with peacock feathers.
  • Minimalist? Place a singular sculpture, whether centered on the mantel or on a side of the mantel that faces a angle while the other is open.
  • Cottage-by-the-beach? arrange a variety of similar colored but varying sized shells across the mantel. Or plump items you treasure, like a jar of sea glass or a cast iron anchor.

Follow the 3 plus 1 rule for easy mantel displays: Place 3 similar items close to one end, and one larger item on the other (as large as the group 3, but no taller than the Town of the picture or mirror over the mantel). Another easy arrangement is to place one item in the Town of the mantel, and flank it with pairs of items on whether side. One of the pairs can be similar, but not identical.

Don't feel bound by rules when arranging your fireplace mantel. Experiment with some wall decorating ideas and arrangements and layer items so they overlap. The analytical mind will prefer symmetry, and the creative eye will prefer asymmetry. Both types need some sort of balance, so play with the items until you are satisfied. If you are ever in doubt, it is good to err on the side of simplicity. Begin with an interesting mantel wall art piece, and build nearby it.

A fireplace is an enviable architectural detail in any home. Properly adorned with a favorable mantelpiece, wall décor, and other accouterments nearby it, your fireplace will come to be a magnificent focal point and a popular conference spot in your home for family and friends.

Creative Fireplace Mantel - Arranging and Wall Decorating TipsTool of the Week - Topiary Shears Tube. Duration : 2.62 Mins.

The tool I have chosen to clip the box shapes with are the topiary sheers. Based on the design of traditional sheep shearers, these light weight and smooth action sheers are held in one hand and used to lightly clip this year's growth. It's such a nice, relaxing job to do, and because they only remove a little at a time, there's no chance of slipping up and disfiguring the topiary bush too severely. Work your way slowly around the plant, standing back to assess and maintaining the shape as you go. I grew a box spiral from a cutting about 10 years ago (inspired by one Alan Tichmarsh did on Gardeners' World) and its now about there. Once clipped, feed with a general purpose organic fertilizer and water well if dry, especially if growing

Filing Secondary and Tertiary guarnatee Claims

When we first started our medical billing firm in 1994 I had no former contact at billing any medical claims, let alone secondary and tertiary. (You mean some people have 3 insurances?) I knew nothing. In fourteen years of billing I've learned quite a bit and I see from questions in our forum that many beginners do not understand secondary and tertiary claims billing at all.

First of all, how does anything get two or three policies and which is carefully primary? If a husband and a wife both work (who doesn't?) and they are both covered by health assurance by their employers, they may both have house policies so they are both covered under each others plan. One would be customary and the other secondary. Now if one of this couple (a few years ago we would have assumed that it would only be the husband) had former military contact and carried over their Tricare military insurance, that would be the third payor (if there was a balance left).

The Topiary

Which firm is customary and which one is secondary is carefully by one of a couple distinct methods. First of all, if a person is working and they carry insurance, that assurance is customary (unless they have Medicare and their owner has less than 100 employees). If a person is retired and has Medicare but the spouse works and carries a house policy, then the spouse's plan would be customary and the Medicare would be secondary.

There is no way to cover every scenario but basically either or not the person or the spouse is working can conclude the order. For dependents (usually children) some go by the "birthday rule" meaning that whichever parents birthday falls first in the year is primary. Of course with all of the disunion out there sometimes the order of assurance is carefully by a court order.

When a outpatient is seen by a victualer the claim is sent on a Cms 1500 form to the customary assurance carrier either electronically or on paper. Electronically it can be sent either directly to the assurance carrier by extra software or through a aid or through a clearing house. When sent on paper it simple means the claim is printed to a paper Cms 1500 form and sent through the mail. anything the case is, it is foremost that you know the order of the policies.

Once the customary assurance carrier pays their share of the claim it is then submitted to the secondary assurance firm if the outpatient has one. Secondary claims can also be sent electronically and on paper. Medicare is mandating electronic submissions even on secondary claims. When submitted electronically all the facts from the eob (explanation of benefits) is entered into the claim facts and submitted to the secondary assurance carrier.

When the secondary is submitted on paper, the claim is printed out again on a cms form and a photocopy of the eob is attached. If other patients are listed on the eob, their personal facts should be hidden. Many offices use black markers (we call them smelly pens) to draw through the unwanted information. I've set up a bunch of assorted width strips of white cardboard that we slide into clear article covers to cover the unwanted facts before we photocopy. We only do this with clubs that are not yet accepting electronic submissions.

If there is still a balance after the secondary assurance carrier pays their share, the claim is sent on to the third carrier. It is printed out again on a cms form and copies of the eobs of both the customary and the secondary assurance carriers are attached.

Whenever you send secondary and tertiary claims on paper, make sure the photocopies you attach are clear, easy to read, and for the accurate date of service. Many assurance carriers scan the eobs which lightens them a little. If the copy you submitted was already light, by the time the claim is processed it may be sent back to you as unreadable. It takes a lot more time to find the customary eob and resubmit a claim than it does to get it right the first time.

Secondary and tertiary claims can sometimes seem like a pain to get paid - especially because they can be for a very small whole of money. It is still foremost to file and track these claims to keep your receivables under control. It may not seem like a lot of money but it adds up. If you have a principles for submitting them it easily isn't that bad.
